SQUARE is out!

My game has released.

Man, what a journey! I feel so good to finally release it out into the world, it's been a long ride. I am also super happy to see people engaging with it! I wanted to share a few words about the history of this game and about it's future.

Brief history

SQUARE had many funny bugs during development

The idea for this game came to me back in 2016. I have this weird, vivid memory of playing World of Warcraft and chatting with a friend - this was back before Discord existed and we were using Skype or Google Hangouts. I had just completed my first ever game and was thinking what to do next, we were just bouncing random ideas off each other. Suddenly this idea came to me: "Wouldn't it be cool to go through a trapped maze like in the movie Cube, but with your friends?". Damn right! I got excited and sat down to work. A prototype was ready in a few months - I thought that sky was the limit and this would be done in just a month or two! And.. well of course it turned out that making games is a much harder process that I realized. My life became busy and I stopped working on the game. I think I'll spare the details of the bumpy road (maybe for another post), suffice to say that every now and then I felt the pull towards Square, returned to it, made an update  and shared it with a group of friends. This continued for many years, and in the back of my mind I've always wondered if other people would enjoy this game as well. And so, I felt, that a release was in order.

And well, here we are!

What's next

What will happen next for this game largely depends on how it's received. I have many ideas on how to improve and expand it, and of course there are bugs that need fixing, but I really want to hear what people playing it think. Motivation (or running out of it) is a big factor when developing a game single handedly, and so it would help greatly if I could share things with others and listen to their feedback. Therefore don't feel shy about posting your thoughts in the comments or on the discord server!

Final words

Well that turned out to be more of a blog post than a dev log, I hope you didn't fall asleep on your keyboard. For the next one let me know if you'd rather read about the plans for the game, the challenges of creating it, or perhaps the bigger picture behind it?

In any case, thank you for reading this far. Have a great weekend!
